Provoke - Good Leadership Provocative thought of the month..... September 2009
Is your inflated ego getting in the way of being a good leader? Some tips about good leadership:
- Most arguments are created because of our inflated egos. A person with ego usually believes there is a right and a wrong. And of course they usually believe there way is the right way,. So most of their energy is spent of convincing people they are right.
- Successful people often are attributed to having an inflated ego – but this false, successful people are usually confident people who have a high degree of self- belief.
- Inflated egos are damaging - it is different to self-belief in that an ego-centric person simply cares only about themselves. They are essentially self-centred and tend to make decisions without thinking about others' views.
- Most managers or business owners are afraid of losing control over their business and will revert to power-over tactics such as relying on their position to drive a decision.
Good leaders do not do this. Good leaders are not trapped by ego and control tactics.
Good leaders encourage people through a genuine self-belief and through good argument; they are not self-effacing, command respect from inclusion and are not afraid to be challenged. The have an inner self- confidence which can rarely be shaken.
More importantly they are not afraid to be wrong.
If you really want to be a good leader that commands respect for the right reasons, do not rely on fear based controlling tactics, your ego or your position power.
There are much easier and more honest ways.
